Exhibition of Spirulina, the Wonder food of the World

OfERR (Ceylon) has exhibited Spirulina in the Agricultural Exhibition organized at Agriculture Farm in Thirunelveli, Jaffna. This exhibition has been organized from 19th to 23rd September 2017 by Agricultural Department of Northern Province, to promote agricultural products that has been produced across Jaffna District.

Spirulina has been regarded as wonder food of the world. At the World Food Conference of 1974, the United Nations lauded Spirulina as being possibly “the best food for the future”. It is a tiny blue-green algae in the shape of a perfect spiral coil. This water plant has renewed itself for billions of years and has nourished many cultures throughout history, in Africa, in the Middle East and in the Americas. Many of the essential nutrients needed by our bodies are concentrated in spirulina. It is comprised of at least 60% all-vegetable protein, essential vitamins and phytonutrients such as the rare essential fatty acid GLA, sulfolipids, glycolipids and polysaccharides.

The Spirulina has become part of OfERR’s income generation scheme as well as the nutrition programme for refugees in India. OfERR had used Spirulina to combat mal-nutrition among malnourished women and children in the refugee camps, while promoting this as a substantial income generation program among the deserving vulnerable households.

Understanding the need to combat medical and nutritional crisis in Sri Lanka with the rare food of the world, OfERR utilized the exhibition space to display Spirulina and expose the wonder benefits of this nutrition-rich food for the visiting persons. The highlighting aspect of this event is that majority had gained knowledge and awareness about the Spirulina and its nutritional benefits. With this initiative, OfERR is taking efforts to combat the malnutrition and life-threatening diseases such as dengue, malaria, typhoid, etc.
